Review of The Mist

Saw The Mist last night and No Country for Old Men the night before. No Country is essentially Fargo in the desert. The Coen Brothers stripped the book of all of its deeper meaning and left the gratuitous violence and odd humor. Since Fargo is the only Coen Brothers movie that I like, No Country wasn't bad.

The Mist, though. Wow. I thought it deserved a special review all of its own.

Spoilers, etc.

never put a sock in a toaster

Watched Eddie Izzard "The Definite Article" yesterday with Andrew. Hysterical. Funnier every time. Also, I finally broke down and bought "Dress to Kill," along with a bunch of Phil Rickman mysteries/horror stories like December, which is the best horror novel ever written. Or close to it.

And I would recommend Wilderness Survival for Girls to anyone who likes edgy, twisty, scary, sexy, indy films about girls.

Otherwise, my life's been fairly predictable. I'm trying to detox a little since I usually don't drink very much and not only have I been drinking lately, I've been drinking. There were jaeger bombs involved at one point, and I still have half a bottle of tequila (Aztec Gold, man, because what good is tequila unless it's CHEAP tequila) and half a bottle of Grgich Hill, 2000 (which is not, in comparison, cheap.)

-

Thinking about getting my hair cut. It's down past the middle of my back now, and heavy. I think maybe just a little off of the ends and some long layers?

The Rockies have recently become the only team to sweep BOTH New York teams in a single season since ... forever. And they're still only at .500.

you know my dream has always been, a freight train leaving town

If the fish and chips didn't kill me, then I figured the two ciders I had along with dinner would. Since I haven't been drinking more than a glass of wine or two at any one time in the past, oh, six months, the mix of sugar, alcohol and grease probably wasn't the best plan.

Anyway, I rationalized the food because it was warm. (Literally, by the time we got downtown, it was below zero and windy. Like, your breath freezing in your lungs kind of cold.) But the ciders just led to one of those odd conversations/arguments about the DaVinci Code, followed by Kim's attempt to explain to me why, exactly, I'm a mix of 2nd season Alice and 3rd Season Jenny from The L Word.

I'm still not clear on that one.

The actual plan was to see Cillian Murphy do his transvestite cabaret dancer thing in Breakfast on Pluto, but dinner took too long because Kim and I got all caught up in the live Irish music. Which, at Jack Quinn's (as [info]horizon_greene knows) can just be some band called Danny and the Boys playing U2 covers.

Anyway, we did make it to the late showing of Freedomland, and, well. I guess that's what I get for reading the book first, right? [no spoilers, just impressions]. )

Speaking of [info]horizon_greene, I might be spending part of Spring Break in Phoenix since, to my utter surprise, she doesn't seem to be sick of me yet. I'm working on that, though.

me and the dragon

Now see, that header isn't as random as it COULD be.

Twisted by the darkside, I am (Spoilers for LOST and ROTS) )

And in other news, I've written something a little new (my first real deviation from swimslash since last August). I'll have NBA Slash up tonight or tomorrow. Yeah, you heard me.

stir of echoes

Hey. *shakes fl* David Caruso is related to Kevin Bacon by exactly six degrees, by my figuring. Can any of you do any better?

Oh, and I dare the film buffs on my list [info]ferrybeans11 for one (if you play the game, dear), to relate Richard Dean Anderson to the Bacon in 6 degrees or less. HAH.

Also, meme-type things.

Since people are starting to do the rants that I asked them to (thank you ever so much [info]spherissa), you can go ahead and ask me for a rant. Any topic.

Also, related to the above and slightly modified. (The original snitched from [info]kawaiimae)

1. Comment with any ship from a fandom that you know I have some knowledge about. (Buffy, Angel, LoTR, HP, FaTF, or OlympicSlash.)

2. I will then rant for as long as I damn well please. :)

3. Put this on your LJ, if you are so inclined.

Later, I just might, if I’m in the right mood, post a general fandom and writing rant. Y’know things that bother me, pet peeves, things that I love, cliches, etc.

The Times They Are A Changin'

I’ve been left alone and unsupervised for several days now. Perhaps, that’s not the greatest idea. When I’m all alone (and under the influence of cold weather and this very odd house with too many doors) I tend to make life changing decisions on impulse.

Today, I applied to Teach For Amerca. There really isn’t any way that they won’t accept my application. They require that you graduate with a bachelors degree by May of 2005 (um, had that one and then another degree by last May) and that you have a GPA of 2.5. Er, yeah. Had that too.

So . . .

They will be calling me in March to set up in interview. At which point, I tell them where I want to go. And then, well, poof. I’m gone.

*hysterical laughter*

I’m thinking Philly, or St. Louis. Or Raleigh. Of course, I could get sent to Miami or Gallup or somewhere in Louisiana or Bismarck.

Oh God. What have I done?

To take my mind off of it?

Thursday

Don't you know that you are a shooting star . . .

I don't want to talk about Christmas. And I'm not quite ready to post New Years resolutions. So, I'm gonna give you all the Movie Quote Quiz.

I got this idea from [info]saava, so naturally, she has to play.

[info]sodiumlight, you're exempt unless you're bored.

Everyone else? *pokes at FL* I mean EVERYONE should give it a try. Humor me.

Oh, and [info]alldoubtaboutit? I stumbled across your request for an Ian C./Michael "What it Means To Be An American" fic. Interesting. Lemme think about it, okay?

One more random thing. I got a CD from [info]horizon_greene and now I have a new musical addiction. Thank you, dear. I LOVE it.

Now for the quiz )

AVP

I just went to see Alien VS. Predator. I took time out of watching the boys in the pool (aren't the Olympics great?), but I think it was worth it. I mean, it wasn't up to the caliber of most of the Alien movies (and I don't care what anybody says, I liked Resurrection), and it didn't have the cheezy thrill of the early Predator vs. Arnold, or the weird urban vibe of Predator II with Danny Glover and the incomparably strange Gary Busey.

AVP was implausible, made ridiculous Stagrgate-ish claims about the Predators, had our heroine wandering around in the Antarctic in nothing but a sweater, and had none of the atmospheric eeriness that we've come to associate with the Alien franchise. However, there were some pretty cool battle scenes between the Aliens and the Predators, and as long as you don't go in expecting much more than that, then you won't be disapointed.

Well. Off to bed where the pretty, pretty swimmer boys can splash around in my dreams ;)
